Welcome to "The Dig" our weekly rundown of our favorite things happening in music right now and a look ahead at what we are excited for this week.
R.I.P. Tom Petty
In the wake of Tom Petty’s death last week many artists were quick to post a small tribute on social media to the legend, but one of the coolest things to see were the artists who have paid tribute to Petty by covering one of his songs at their shows. Artists like Wilco, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Father John Misty have covered Petty this last week, but here are some of our favorites.
Miley Cyrus (Feat. Billy Ray Cyrus) - "Wildflowers"
Fleet Foxes - "Don’t Come Around Here No More"
The War On Drugs - "Time To Move On"
The University of Florida - "I Won’t Back Down"
If you still haven’t heard enough Petty covers, Dallas' own Roomsounds will be doing a night of Tom's music in tribute to the iconic songwriter/performer on October 17th at Twilite Lounge.
Sound on Sound
Another shock to music fans this past week was the announcement that Sound on Sound music festival was cancelled. Sound On Sound Festival started last year as a replacement for Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest, and was scheduled to take place next month with artists like Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Iggy Pop and The Shins. In an interview with Austin Chronicle, SOS booker Graham Williams explained that a financial backer had pulled out at the last minute a week and a half ago and, while they tried to find new investors, they were unable to pull together the proper funds and made the decision to cancel. One of our favorite new liquors, Black Feather Whiskey had their official launch party last Thursday in Austin and invited their favorite band The Texas Gentlemen to play. Check out some photos our good friend Matt Carlin took from the event.
